I recently had an opportunity to visit Fatburger in Laughlin, NV. Fatburger is a burger chain with many locations throughout the Southwest and several locations across the globe. Fatburger is known for its large and in charge approach to big juicy hamburgers. They use fresh beef for each order and give customers various choices for a customized burger.
My wife and I were staying at the Don Laughlin Resort and Casino in Laughlin, NV while at a family reunion. As soon as I walked through the front door of the casino the first thing I saw was Fatburger. I was instantly bothered with thoughts of when I would be able to make a stop for a bite.
Nicole and I headed to Fatburger on our first night at the Casino. I had never been to a Fatburger before, so I was unsure of what to order. I saw that they had burger sizes of Medium, Large, X-Large, and XX-Large (1/3 lb, 1/2 lb, 1 lb, and 1 1/2 lbs respectively). These were huge burgers! We decided to split a burger since they were so big. I walked up to the counter and ordered the X-Large Burger with cheddar cheese, mayo, mustard, and ketchup. I also ordered fries and a side of onion rings (by recommendation of my Mother in-law).
As soon as I ordered the burger, the cashier yelled back, “Extra Large, Cheddar!” The cook immediately threw two giant pink meat balls on the skillet. Fatburger cooks their burgers with the smashed technique. A big ball of fresh meat is thrown on a searing hot skillet and smashed down with a heavy spatula. This technique leads to a very nice caramelized crunch to the meat and gives the patty an odd shape. My burger had two of these hulk-worthy bad boys.
The burger came out within a few minutes. As soon as I saw the burger I knew I had made a mistake. I should have only ordered a Large or Medium. The burger was steaming hot. I cut off a chunk for Nicole and we both dug in. At first bite, the burger oozed with juiciness. The beef had a wonderful crunch on the outside while maintaining a great moist inside. The beef was cooked a nice medium-well.
My only complaint of the burger were the toppings. There was way too much mustard on this burger. I am not a huge mustard fan. I like a little on my burger but this was overpowering. On a second visit to Fatburger I ordered a small burger with no sauces and enjoyed it more.
The fries were average. Fatburger offers the choice of fat or skinny fries, aka steak cut or regular cut. The onion rings were breaded and hot. They could have used salt right out of the fryer but that is about it.
The X-Large burger was delicious, but it was one of the greasiest burgers I’ve ever eaten. Seriously. Greasy.
If you have a chance to stop at a Fatburger, do it! Just approach with caution.
